ADF Serials Message Board > Navy Aircraft - Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm > 1964 How Ran Changed Melbourne Intended

A 1964-65 SECRET document about replacing HMAS Melbourne with a refurbished ESSEX Class carrier and PHANTOM F-4s - I'm gobsmacked - we know MELBOURNE was refurbished in 1967-8 and A4Gs with S2Es with Wessex 31Bs for ASW were acquired/modified (helos). It is here because it shows what goes on behind the scenes that is SECRET then - but known some 30 years later. What will we know about the F-35A purchase by Oz in some 15+ years time?

RAN proposal for a replacement aircraft carrier and fixed wing aircraft
Contents range 1964 - 1966; Series number A1945; Control symbol 244/3/64, Access status Open; Barcode 1565492

Oz Skyhawks were initially A-4Es but with A-4F mods to become A-4Fs but then changed again so designation changed eventually to A-4G but we always at the time 1970s referred to them as A4Gs, without the hyphen - less manual typing.

From about page 82 in original doc online there is a discussion of British/RN ASW tactics so this document has it all....

39 Mb PDF about RAN FAA 'Fleet Defence' concepts (from USN mostly):

Fleet Defence ASW Carriers USN-RAN A-4 Skyhawk 1960s-1970s pp44 (PDF 39Mb)

https://onedrive.live.com/?id=root&cid=CBCD63D6340707E6

As usual best to 'right mouse' click on the file to 'Download' it to your computer first before opening it with the latest Adobe Reader suitable for your operating system. Sadly I'm discovering in Windows 10 (just started to use it) that all the embedded .wmv videos will not play. Some will after many clicks to make them play (with many error messages). To convert these old videos to embedded .FLV videos probably will not happen soon. :-(

This link is direct to the PDF: http://1drv.ms/1lnTy48

This means it will download in your browser so to keep it you will have to save it to your computer subsequently. However this method is FRAUGHT - especially for larger PDFs. Don't bother trying this method with the 4.4Gb PDFs. USE THE FIRST METHOD AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.

Hi Luig

Guess we should blame Pre-Konfronski Irian Java and later Konfronski for most of it and the rest on red Hoards playing dominos.

I've been currently researching a lot of this period lately, and have been "startled" per some of the files I've read myself.

Let alone the grab for Nukes, be they our personally developed home brand or American stored nukes here to pre-empting striking Indonesia.

Great reading, yet with a cold shiver up one's timbers

One additional option for the RAN was getting one of the RN Bulwark Class CVs. Because most by that time had been converted sans cat to Commando Carriers, seem to fizzel

I think we dodged a bullet by not going with ORISKANY - even if it was possible - turns out the deck was coated with PCBs and the carrier filled with it. Hazards had to be removed before she was sunk many years later: It was bad enough that ships of that era and before were also filled with asbestos....
