Skyhawks: The History of the RNZAF Skyhawks 9 February 2011 Skyhawks: The History of the RNZAF Skyhawks is a new book written by a Skyhawk maintainer Don Simms and aviation writer Nick Lee Frampton. The book is in brilliant colour, with many photographs and will offer a reader an understanding of what it was like to be in the professional, close-knit team that was the RNZAF Air Combat Force. Whether in the flying units at Ohakea and Nowra, or in the support units at Ohakea and Woodbourne, they were professionals dedicated to operating old but well-maintained aircraft that formerly flew with the RAN's Fleet Air Arm. [Even when sold to and flown by the New Zealanders, the Skyhawks were valued by the Australian Navy. A fleet of six Skyhawks was based at Nowra and they trained with Australian warships. Because they were small they were considered excellent for training because they were more difficult to detect and for the warship's defence systems to lock on to]. The achievements of the Air Combat Force over many decades is recorded in the publication, while the book is dedicated to all those who flew and supported the Skyhawk in its years of active Royal New Zealand Air Force service. The 338-page publication will be released on Anzac Day, April 25. The cost will be $75.
