"Last year I bought my father a DVD about flying boats because he's mainly into civil aircraft. He lent it to me and I managed to watch it last night, only to find that it's a real treasure trove for RAAF fans.

I was really stunned at the footage in the 80-odd minutes, including:

* The Fairey IIIDs on their round-the-continent flight
* Seagull IIIs in Flight
* Southamptons on the water and in the air
* Seagull V/Walrus, including a catapault launch off HMAS Australia
* Short Empires in RAAF markings, including one with an odd protuberance on its nose (a rudimentary turret?)
* Sunderlands both in the UK and in Oz, including one in Foliage Green that came to a rather embarrassing end
* The famous damaged 461 Sqn Sunderland landing on a grass airfield
* NEIAF Dornier 24s in flight (sadly not in RAAF markings)
* Catalinas aplenty and a brief clip of a Kingfisher (sadly, no Mariners)

I'll reiterate that all of the above are film, not photos, and they provide a wealth of detail for modellers and RAAF enthusiasts. There's also of course footage of civil Empires, Cats, Hydes and so on, plus interviews with lots of old air and ground crew.

Compared with some of the other DVDs that are on the market, this was a fantastically researched production, and the narration was accurate, clear and unobtrusive.
