Historic flight to get a new home ROBERT CRAWFORD 01 May 2013

"THE face of HMAS Albatross continues to change, with the RAN Historic Flight set to get a new home.

As part of the base expansion, the Historic Flight, located in one of the base’s huge hangars, is to be relocated in a new purpose-built building closer to the Fleet Air Arm Museum.

The Historic Flight is to come under the Historic Aircraft Restoration Society Inc (HARS) management and will be known as Navy Heritage Flight.

The project, which will involve building three new hangars and an administration block, as well as a hardstand and taxiway to the base’s runway, will be built just north of the Fleet Air Arm Museum.

Museum manager Terry Hetherington said it was an exciting new venture that would become part of the museum precinct.

“People will be able to see the static displays of planes we have in the museum and then continue on to the Historic Flight Centre and actually see the working aircraft,” he said.

He said the new facility would allow the aircraft to be more easily taken to various museums and air shows around the country.

The RAN Historic Flight owns and operates seven historic aircraft – an Iroquois helicopter, a Tracker, a Firefly, two Dakota aircraft, a Sea Fury fighter and a Scout helicopter.

“This will mean there is a lot more activity around the museum, especially with the historic flight guys, every day of the week and on weekends,” Mr Hetherington said.

There will be no extra charge to visitors to the museum; the one entrance fee will also allow them access to the new facility."

Great stuff,

A new facility and a new co-operative agreement between the ADF and an experienced warbird museum/operator.

HARS will be using the hangar, as most of the Navies ex aircraft will come under the HARS umbrella. So I have been led to believe.
