Film Collection Online: Not a Common Carrier

To complement the release of the film collection online, the film and sound team are creating a series of showreels to give you a taste of the material that is now readily available at your fingertips!

Recent additions to the film available on line include material from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Public Relations unit. This compile of selected clips focuses on the former flagship of the RAN, HMAS Melbourne, and on carrier operations with the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm from 1960 until 1980. Aircraft are shown being moved into position and taking off with the aid of the ship’s steam catapult. However this system did not work faultlessly- as can be seen in the clip. Various shots of plane’s landing show how it was possible to slow a planes momentum in a confined area. Views of the flight deck of HMAS Melbourne give an impression of the activities of the sailors and aviators who worked to keep the navy’s aeroplanes flying. Planes seen include: Sea Venoms, Gannets, Skyhawks, Trackers and Wessex helicopters. The soundtrack comes from a number of Navy PR newsreels from the 1960s called “Navy in Focus”. Sound effects are from Douglas A-4 Skyhawk - operational sounds (S04698) an actuality recording held in The Australian War Memorial’s collection.

889 is the side number of the second aircraft with A4G 884 which flew non-stop (refuelling in mid-air near Adelaide) from NAS Nowra to offshore Perth WA where the pair arrested onboard HMAS Melbourne, 10 Nov 1970. This video shows the two arresting with the pilots as seen in the Navy News story graphic below:

Murray Buckett was lucky enough to ONLY have the wire make a cut on his face as it broke - whipping upwards into the cockpit. I hope Trevor Rieck will send a complete account of the accident soon.

This is likely the first time 8 A4Gs were onboard - the entire complement of VF-805 late in 1972. MELBOURNE had gone north for exercises in SEA with 6 aircraft and on return when near Darwin the remaining two embarked via a cross country by Uluru and support from VC-724 aircraft for the journey.

17 NOV 1972 – HMAS MELBOURNE launches two Skyhawks to Darwin where they are joined by two Skyhawks from RANAS Nowra flown by LCDR Lamay, USN and LEUT(P) Winterflood, RAN. All four A4Gs now embark in HMAS MELBOURNE. There are now eight Skyhawks embarked.

"14 Nov 1972, A4G side number unknown Lcdr Tom LaMay USN, 883 pilot Leut Graham Winterflood. Two A4Gs of VF805 "B" Flight joined HMAS Melbourne in Darwin via a ferry flight from Nowra–Edinburgh–Ayers Rock–Alice Springs (o/night) Darwin Nov 1972"

This is not an inflight arrest - just an ordinary arrest and there are many variations seen in the video depending on the way the arrestor wire is picked up during the variable approach to do so.

The clip seen was on the ABC '7:30 Report' unremarked as an example of 'old RAN FAA aviation' a few months ago now. I nearly fell of my chair. I knew the BENNINGTON website so contacted the chap there who made the clip. You'll see me at the end. Pic is also on the A-4 Association website. You asked for it. :P

Of course the clip and info in detail is in the front of the 4.4GB PDF. Why do I keep saying that? Because it is true. Youse'll have to see all the 9,700 odd pages to get it all (of course not all are about the A4G though). B)

This video is an excellent explanation of the duties of LSO in the A4G/S2E/G era aboard HMAS Melbourne. If you know nothing about an LSO you will know something after viewing this 1963 USN movie:
