Guys,
I noted the markings on one of our seahawks today at Avalon, so which is it, N24-002 '71' or N24-015 '84'? Attached Image |

Could it be they swapped tail sections as was pretty common with the Macchis ?

I thought that could be the case too, but the number on the front had the same issue.
I attempted to find the constructors plate but had no luck, any help with its location? Anyway I spoke with a maintenance person there today and he had a story for me, the guy yesterday had no idea... I was told that the aircraft went in for repainting as a part of regular maintenance and the paperwork was mixed with another and it came out of the shop painted as N24-002 '71', so there were two and it had to be fixed. What we see is the result. I would be nice to confirm with the details on the plate... |

Darren,
I had a chat with some Navy sources who also confirmed that paint scheme mix up story and added that there was a lot of butt kicking during the "recovery phase". I would have loved to see the double take as two N24-002s were spotted on the flight line! BC |

It really was a poor job of solving the problem...
