BRUMBY ANNOUNCES DOUBLE WIN FOR AVALON AIRPORT

Premier John Brumby today announced the Avalon Airport had been secured to host the Australian International Airshow until at least 2015.

Mr Brumby said as part of a new agreement between the Victorian Government, Aerospace Australia and Avalon Airport, the airport would continue to host the airshow through until 2015 with next year’s airshow confirmed for the 1 - 6 March, 2011.

As part of the agreement, Avalon Airport has given a longer-term commitment beyond 2015 that it will be able to stage an airshow at the airport every two years until 2025.

At Avalon Airport today, Mr Brumby also welcomed Tiger Airways’ choice of Avalon Airport for its third Australian base which will create 200 new jobs in the region and has been backed by support from the Victorian Government.

Tiger today also announced it will start flying from Avalon Airport to the Gold Coast from November 10 this year with tickets on sale today, and that it plans to increase the number of Victorian-based A320 aircraft from five to 10 with at least two to be based at Avalon.

“Our Government is making the right investments to lock-in a prosperous future for our state and the Australian International Airshow puts Victoria on a world stage, showcasing our aerospace, advanced manufacturing and aviation service firms across the world,” Mr Brumby said.

“Last year’s airshow attracted well over 170,000 visitors, helping to boost the economy by $121 million, created 1800 jobs and featured over 600 exhibitor companies from 25 countries.

“The Australian International Airshow is one of Victoria’s great major events and the arrangement we have put in place will mean the 2011 Airshow will proceed as the centrepiece of celebrations of the 90 year anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

“These two developments are great news for local jobs, great news for Victoria’s major events industry and great news for the Geelong tourism industry.”

Industry and Trade Minister Jacinta Allan said the new Tiger Airways operations base at Avalon consolidated the growing low cost carrier’s presence in Victoria, also home to its headquarters in Melbourne, and would give visiting tourists more options when visiting the state.

“Tiger’s decision to open a new base at Avalon Airport, where it will commence flights later this year, is great news that will deliver new jobs and boost our tourism sector,” Ms Allan said.

“With Tiger flying to Avalon as well as Melbourne Airport, even more visitors will have easy access to our many leading tourism attractions along the Great Ocean Road, as well as to Geelong and Melbourne.”

Member for Lara John Eren said securing the Australian International Airshow at Avalon and Tiger’s investment in the region was great news for the local community.

“The airshow puts our region on the map – it creates jobs and is a major boost to tourism,” Mr Eren said.

“Securing the future of the airshow here at Avalon is great news for our local communities.”

The Australian International Airshow is a biennial event which showcases the State’s aerospace, aviation and defence industries - three of Victoria’s most strategically important sectors.

The Victorian aviation industry employs more than 20,000 people in the broader aviation and tourism sector, which contributes an estimated $20 billion per year to the state economy.

Lets hope they spice it up a bit.
It was rather poor last time and without the F-111 "dump and burn" and the Caribou "wheelbarrow" they are running out of tricks!
Now if Uncle Sam could add F-22, F-35 etc I might consider attending.
How about getting the former USSR contingent back, they were great value.
Or now we are such good buddies with China they could offer a bit.

The F/A-18F's will be the new kids on the block but some more exotic big iron from abroad would not go astray at all.
