Nowra Aerodrome Construction (1945) 16 minutes DMR Dept Main Roads NSW
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sY71Z7FpGR8 Some may recognize the IGLOO hangar of yore.... :-) Thanks to Dave Masterson. The scraping of the hill over run of Runway 26 (western side of aerodrome) to be transferred down the south side of the runway on a special dirt road by BIG YELLOW DUMPSTERS to 'fill' in the valley before the threshold of same runway in an effort to 'reduce' the downdraught during westerly winds, was a sight to behold circa 1969-70. I guess the downdraught was moved further away from usual spot - whether or not it was reduced depended entirely upon wind strength and direction - but youse can only move so much dirt, it is/was a big hole to fill. 1969 has been noted as one of the wettest years on record for Nowra with the runway intersection flooded a lot until the drainage fixed. The fillum shows some of the drainage works. This post has been edited by Luig on Jan 20 2019, 02:14 PM |
