From our question email
Please contct me if you want further details Hi ADF serials, I was just checking out your information on Wessex and Squirrel aircraft. In the old days I worked on Wessex at 723 Squadron with deployments to East Sale and was a member of Stalwart Flight for the Fiji coup (Tuvalu trip) and commissioning crew on HMAS success as a member of Success Flight (round Australia trip and to Vanuatu). Later on I was transferred over to squirrels with Darwin flight, went up top for STARFISH and to K89 (HMAS Darwin ran aground near Hayman Island) we also had to put up with greasy, oil leaking Sea King on our flight deck after it ditched into the sea and landed back on us with one engine. We went to RIMPAC, HMAS Darwin ran aground on the north shore, and whilst it was in dry dock we worked on the squirrel at Barbers Point Airbase, had a quick stint on HMAS Canberra as well for a trip to NZ (still as Darwin flight) and completed two trips to the Persian Gulf. Yep, I was part of the crew that cleaned up the flight deck after the ships engine failure and did the engine change out on 64 in Bahrain. I was also the lunatic that produced the ship’s flights newsletter, if you could call it that! I think I recognised one of your groups name; Anthony Haigh may have been an observer on Darwin flight and use to take pictures for me with my camera sometimes when they went flying. If so could you please pass on my contact details, which would be appreciated. If you’re after more information and pictures etc I am slowly unpacking boxes when I am home after another recent and hopefully final move. Regards Stephen Wood Woody, ex LSATWL Attached Image |
