Does nyone know of F/Sgt CR Green of 100 Squadron who won the CGM for throwing his Beaufort into a melee with about 10 japanese aircraft attacking a merchant ship, and driving them off? Date unknown. Does anyone know the Codes and "A" number of his Beaufort?

Hi Millsy2

You could have the labourious time and flick through 467 pages of the ORB at the NAA: http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx

I just can't leave a mystery alone hey. Had a quick trawl

Circa Page 150 circa June 1943 he's listed,..went back to Decemebr 1942

Flew A9-32/75/181/198/200/227/203 QH-R/206/210 QH-D/187/216 QH-V

Up to July 43 and it seems he's left by then,...Page 182

So somewhere between 150 and 182.

Must leave the fun for you now ;)

According to Song of the Beaufort, Clarence Richard Green earned the CGM for attacking 3 Japanese fighters who were strafing survivors from a sinking ship (p 265). No details of date or serial given in book. Green served with 7 Sqn before joining 100 Sqn and then moving on to 8 Sqn.

A9-181 incident took place near Buna on 8 Mar 1943. Ship involved was the
SS Jacob, part of a convoy carrying supplies to the troops at Buna. Aircraft was some distance ahead of the Jacob when nine enemy bombers, escorted by 13 fighters attacked the convoy to score direct hits on the ship. Incident reported to base but while the escorting corvette began to pick up survivors from the sinking ship, 3 enemy fighters came down to strafe the merchant seamen survivors. Green banked steeply to attack them and the fighters broke off the strafing. He then patrolled between the fighters and the survivors until the enemy left the scene. Song of the Beauforts , p 78

Yeah, it's gets a bit messy as there are 2 Greens that were with 100 Sqn! This guy is referred to as Reg Green in the book, Knew the incident occurred before A9-225's demise but Song of the Beauforts does not have a good index so it was a matter of going through the book manually. Guess they could have done with a librarian's help on this ;)

Ah I remember the ORB when researching Geoff and the boys <_<
