Hi, interesting advice from Ozhawk and my Mates Buz and Mike

Recently uncovered in the Al Wadi al Jadid Desert in Middle East, what is a RAF (DAF)P-40E-1, not a Spitfire as stated in video.

That is truly amazing!

:o

I'm gobsmacked that a find like that is still out there all these years later.

Original Video shows the extent of sand erosion of covering sandbank, that's now blown away!

Buz stated it may be a OTU P-40E-1(definitely a P-40E-1 due to nav lights location and other things) Thus a ET***/early EV*** Serial H87A4 aircraft.

Nice to see they're still out there. I'm in Darwin at present and I haven't seen a wreck yet! Not true did see a Mirage III in bad condition at Winnellie. Early days and plan to provide some interesting pics soon for sharing at both ADF-Serials and Oz @war

Meanwhile I shall return to my "Life support" a/c bedroom to rest and get over some of my past back pains and strains that are affecting me this week.

Ciao

Another couple of links on this topic from the Eagle Eyed Phantom:

The photo imagery is quite extensive and it now appears that there is an Australian connection to this aircraft - (It has an Australian made battery!)

People have been checking out our website too (Hi Mark) to see if we have a listing of 3 & 450 Sqn P-40's. We have been discussing that but we are not there yet.

Anyway, check these links out - it just underlines what a remarkable time capsule this aircraft really is.

Cheers

Actually we are ;) but not posted on 2A29 or Article XV due to my time constraints: All 274 of them little blessed Kittyhawks 1s

First:AK577 CW#7 c/n14959 H-87A-1 with 4 GunWing Direct Purchase 3Sqn RAAF at ? . on Blenheim escort, by Bf.109s.JONES, Robert Sydney - (Flying Officer); Service Number - 290726; File type - Casualty - Repatriation; Aircraft - Kittyhawk AK 577; Place - El Agheila area, Middle East; Date - 11 January 1942

Last:EV367 H-87A-4 Fin Fillet/Fishtail exhausts 450Sqn RAF(RAAF) OK-X Cat B on operations after being attacked by BF109's 3/9/42 whilst with 450Sqdn. SOC 010244 ?

What' the muted Serial? ET574?

Buz states ( And you heard it first at ADF-Serials Site)

ET574 – 260Sqn SAAF HS-B
Shipped to Africa on SS Mormac Swan, SOC 3/7/42
Fate – Aircraft left for ferry flight to RSU, but was noticed to have set the incorrect course. The aircraft flew with u/c/ locked down due to damage and is thought to have crashed in the desert due to fuel exhaustion 28/6/42. – The pilot was F/Sgt D.C.H.Copping Serv#785025

Me States per HS-D comment on Web

ET575 was also 260 SAAF Sqn's HS-D which was lost 01/09/42 with Lt. H.E.Ironside Serv#205844V
Whether this the mess up per HS-D??

So it would be better if someone can state the actual ET or FY41 or CW# behind the armour plate on station #5 or from the engine mount, then Buz or I can ID it

Fantastic find though!!!

Best
Gordy ^_^

Further to this btw
With the tail wheel in the down locked position, that backs up[ the story of flying with gear down locked.

They all seem to agree per our 07/05/12 Message Board comment: Dennis Copping on the 10/05/12

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-21...ara-desert.html

So to end the drama, its 41-35928 ala ET574 if the Station 5 stamping, if is accepted, be "1035". So there's another first

P-40E-1 c/n19761 Shipped "Foxtrot"(DAF) ex New York City on the 26/5/42

From the Phantom:

QUOTE

Mystery over WWII airman who went missing in desert: Family devastated after being told bones found near downed craft cannot be tested for his DNA
• The 12 human bones were found on some rocks three miles from the wreckage
• A piece of parachute and a metal button dated 1939 were found nearby
• Flight Sergeant Dennis Copping crashed at the spot in 1942, and is thought to have wandered off into the desert
• The perfectly preserved plane was found earlier this year by Polish oil exploration workers
• But after months of waiting, his family have been told it is not possible to extract DNA from the remains
