It never dropped a bomb in anger. "Redeye" is the story of a group of innovative Australian and international engineers who propelled the RAAF to the very forefront of training and simulation with the F-111C mission simulator. Thales Australia, who has operated the simulator and F-111 training programs since 1998, wanted to document the challenges and successes of the project for a simulation industry event in June 2010. Thales Australia, who has operated the simulator and F-111 training programs since 1998, wanted to document the challenges and successes of the project for a simulation industry event in June 2010. Here the challenge was to uncover the compelling human interest story behind the technical nature of the material, spanning a 17 year period, while effectively communicating the scientific aspects of the project and its impact on the greater defence of Australia. Careful research was required to piece together a story structure which was accurate and which drew on the memories of many different participants with many different perspectives. Several interviewees were highly technical and had not appeared on camera before, which required careful guidance to deliver genuine, fluent statements in line with the story structure, as well as illuminating new and unexpected perspectives that enhanced the original script profoundly. Filmed in full high definition, this 35-minute film portrays the development challenges, eclectic team and exceptional outcomes of this system, while effectively handling the delicate balance required to cover topics such as defence contracts and classified military technology." |

I remember when this work started off in about 1993 by Wormalds in Dee Why, Sydney. I guess Thales must have taken them over.
The work was definitely ground-breaking by providing a fully operational mission simulator with visuals, at probably a fraction of the cost of that provided by a major overseas simulation company. I think it was delivered to Amberley in about 1996. |

I have just watched the 35 minute version which I must say was extremely interesting.
The F-111 was unique in its capabilities and I can't help wondering if we were a bit premature putting the pig out to pasture. |
