HMAS Albatross emergency: unexploded bomb found
By ROBERT CRAWFORD Sept. 4, 2014,
QUOTE
"WORKERS on the new $138 million helicopter facilities at HMAS Albatross have been evacuated and the site locked down after unexploded ordnance was dug up by a backhoe operator on Thursday morning.

What is thought to be a 50-year-old unexploded shell was discovered by the operator in the south west corner of the new development, which will eventually be the home of navy’s new MH-60R Seahawk Romeo helicopters.

It is understood the bomb was found outside the perimeter of the new complex, which is being built on the base’s western pad, as the operator was digging a hole in preparation for additional construction work.

Lend Lease, which is constructing the new complex, called a halt to work and evacuated workers to its emergency evacuation points, around 500m from where the shell was found.

Experts from Holsworthy army base are expected to arrive at HMAS Albatross on Thursday afternoon to examine the shell.

It is expected the shell will be disposed of and workers, who were given the res of the day off, will return to the site on Friday.

The operation of HMAS Albatross was not affected during the emergency.

The new facility will be the home of 725 Squadron, which is training to fly and maintain the new Seahawk Romeos in the United States, and 816 Squadron, which flies the current Seahawks.

The first of the Romeos are expected back at the base in coming weeks."
