Hi all,
Found this image amongst my late Grandfathers collection. I can only assume it was taken somewhere in New Guinea during his time with 30 squadron c1943. It appears to an American P38 Lightning, but why are the nose and tail numbers inverted? Any ideas? Bryan Attached Image |

No, not inverted, but reversed.
Nose number is 153, 53 on the fin. |

Going by the nose number, its fair to middle that its either a 339th FS /475th Fighter Group or 433rd FS/475thFighter Group or outside,...80th FS/35thFighter Group P-38 depending on area location.
Looks like a model P-38F/G/H, .....being O/D. Need a location, and I can "fly" to it Babe IE: 43/09/14 P-38G 43-2211 80FS 8FG 5 GAC 3 [ground crew] NGU Kila Drome 431010 P-38G 43-2196 9FS 49FG 5 CRTEF 5 Baarnes, Clayton J NGU Horanda 431008 P-38G 43-2208 9FS 49FG 5 CRTEF 5 Wandray, Ralph H NGU Horanda 431015 P-38G 43-2384 80FS 8FG 5 TOA 4 Wilson, James R NGU Kila AD [APO 929] 431012 P-38G 43-2388 9FS 49FG 5 TAC 3 Kirsch, Lawrence M NGU Kiriwina 431012 P-38H 42-66535 80FS 8FG 5 TAC 4 Shea, Norman R NGU Kiriwina 431024 P-38H 42-66544 9FS 49FG 5 CRL 5 Ralph, Charles L NGU Horanda 431026 P-38H 42-66576 9FS 49FG 5 TAC 3 Ralph, Charles L NGU Kiriwina 431124 P-38H 42-66527 433FS 475FG 5 LAC 3 Hancock, Richard L NGU Dobodura #10 431102 P-38H 42-66581 433FS 475FG 5 CRL 5 Palmer, James H NGU Kiriwina Is 431117 P-38H 42-66587 433FS 475FG 5 LAC 3 Brenizer, Chase (NMI) Jr NGU Dobodura [FS #15] 431108 P-38H 42-66592 431FS 475FG 5 LAC 4 Monk, Franklin A NGU Lae Best Gordy |

Mystery solved.
Turned out to be Ligtning P38H 42-66841 which force landed at Faita Airfield Madang Province Papua New Guinea in September 1943. Pacific Wrecks Ligtning P38H 42-66841 When i contacted Bob Jarrett of CLASSIC JETS FIGHTER MUSEUM in South Australia he was absolutely ecstatic that an image of the actual event had finally came to light. He thought he'd never see the day of an image at the time of the event. CLASSIC JETS FIGHTER MUSEUM Great story of recovery and restoration and a fantastic outcome. Regards Bryan |
