Received these six photos (amalgamated into one to post here) via e-mail without any details other than this:
"A captured Zero. This one of the 475 Sqn of the Royal Australian Air Force. Evidently it was received from the from the Technical Air Intelligence Unit-Southwest Pacific Area (TAIU-SWPA)." Attached Image |

There are a number of Zeros involved here and I think a few crossed wires!
457 Squadron's Zero: (The aircraft pictured above, distinguished by its SEAC roundels) From our Zero page http://www.adf-gallery.com.au/zero.htm Found at Clarke Field and rebuilt by the TAIC unit. Referred to as TAIC #11, the real id is unknown to us. The aircraft was loaned to 457 Sqn to be used for evaluation against our aircraft and flown to Singapore for testing by ATIU-SEA. It's ultimate fate is unknown, but some accounts claim that it crashed into Singapore harbour killing its Australian pilot. 457 Squadron ORB shows that it arrived at Morotai on 28th April 1945 There were other Zeros at the Eagle Farm based ALLIED TECHNICAL AIR INTELLIGENCE UNIT (ATAIU) see http://www.hangar7.org.au/ I would suggest that the EA/88 Card refers to one of them and not 457's example. Our Captured Aircraft page is a (stalled) work in progress that needs some more time and effort spent on it. Attached Image |
