The crew of Canberra A84-231, Flg Off Michael Herbert and Plt Off Robert Carver will finally be returning home on Monday 30 Sep 09 38 years after their last mission began. While the day will be sombre for the families of the two families it will also mark the day when the last of the Australian servicemen have returned home from Vietnam 27 years after our involvement in that conflict ended.

I will be there when the aircraft lands and if appropriate I will upload a couple of photos of the ceremony.

Touchdown and the crew of Magpie 91 finally complete their mission that started on 3 Nov 70.

The day was warm and the skies were clear when the aircraft was preparing to land. The silent of the 500 or more guests and Defence personnel was only broken by the applause of many of those that attended when the wheels touched down.

As the aircraft, A97-006, moved into position one could only think how solomn a moment this was for the families. The Veterans and other members who were seated to the left of the aircraft either stood or moved positions for a better view.

The aircraft parked adjacent the Temora Aviation Museum's Canberra bomber and lowered the ramp allowing the two men to disembark on the shoulders of the fellow servicemen and women, flanked by a guard of honour formed by members of Australia's Federation Guard.

Foxtel screened the whole ceremony last night on chanel 607, quite impressive.

I saw Temora had their 02 Bird-dog there also.

Closure at last for the families involved.
"Lest we forget"
Does anyone object to these images being added to Canberra A84-231's gallery?

I had the honour of attending today's military funeral in Toowoomba for Pilot Officer Carver.

My wife and I have been discussing the draping of the Australian flag over coffins recently and we were wondering if the flag is folded in a similar fashion to the US flag before being presented to the bereaved families.

Does anyone know if this is the case or not?

Thanks Mick. Not the ANF but the RAAF Ensign. I am curious as to how long they have been doing this for now.
