News is that it was A15-102 from the 5th Aviation Regiment and attached to the US Army's 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, crashed in Zabul Province on 30/05/2011.

Original remanufactured CH-47C A15-002

The Australian Army Chinook transport helicopter crashed in Afghanistan, killing one passenger,2nd Lt Case, 27 and injuring the five other occupants.

The incident occurred during a resupply mission 90km (48nm) east of the central Afghan town of Tarin Kot, said Australia's Department of Defence. Ground fire has been ruled out as the cause of the crash, it added.

A US Army Chinook operating with the Australian helicopter immediately landed to provide medical assistance and to evacuate the downed aircraft's crew. The Australian aircraft was subsequently destroyed on the ground after it was deemed to be unsalvageable.

"While we are yet to understand exactly what led to the incident, I am comfortable that the available evidence precludes insurgent small arms fire or rocket fire as a contributing factor," said Australian Chief of Joint Operations Maj Gen Ash Power.

Thanks Dave & Gordy,

It's a very sad loss of a fine young man.

Here is a pic of A15-002 in earlier times.

Just a bit of extra info on this.

The pilot killed was not a Chinook pilot. He was in the sandpit to fly UAVs as he was not yet qualified on any operational type and was waiting for a place on a course to become available. He was sitting on the ramp when the aircraft departed controlled flight.

A very good bloke by all accounts. RIP

Hi Everyone,

We have been asked whether the photo at the head of this article is really A15-102 or the photo of another downed Chinook being used as a stock photo.

Any ideas?
