Ahoy thar,
One bit of news that went under the radar was the acquisition and contract signing for a 2400 Tonne 90 meter Aviation Training ship based on the Netherlands Damen Shipyard's Off shore Patrol Vessel (OPV) 2400 Platform. A crew of 60 and able to house a single MH-60R, and can be armed with a main gun up to 76mm and two 20mm Canon. Judging by the below drawings, she's a corvette size ship,.........could this be a forerunner of a 4-6 class OPV to partially replace the Armidale Class. Since we built two simular vessels for the RNZN,..will it be built in Williamtown Dock ,..or at the Damen's ship yards?? Doesn't say when,..as I haven't finish reading the Budget,....."so harsh, but necessary" Best Gordy Attached Image |

You're missing the point, Grumpy.........
The training ship recovers and launches unmarinised ADF helos and has absolutely zero defensive kit? Perfect preparation for a stint in the LHDs! :P :D  |

Ah Hoy there Hardies
Yeah, the first artist rendition dated in 2014 when announced was generic, seemed exciting and possibly the forefront design of the future mission adaptive OPV. Its a great name for her too,..per first Helio Alas not,....but I must say for its role to help train budding young Eagles, its right for its intended role,..and, if needed in a war time role,... would be no doubt have the built-in design and reinforcement for bolt on weapons(25-35mm Chain Remote Guns etc, and the Ma Duce) should we ever get down to that equation. Lets give "not a gonski" and remember the excess expenditure of all things socialist things resulted in the RAN not ordering a new ship, save this one, and a second hand RN Amphib during the preceding 6 years to 2014,..resulting in the valley of death in Ship building in Oz terms in the first place. Reminds me of those 12 new subs and 20 OPVs in the 2009 White Paper, and the three AWDs ( to be all in service by 2016)......."where are they now". Meaningful talks and announcements are a plenty by those elected then, but new ships floating and wearing the White ensign are just limited to two LPDs to date ( or is that still one?). Arghhhhhhhhh |

Hi Warhawk
Do you know where I can find any drawings of the latest design ? The original design looked quite good and I hope the latest is similar. Thanks Bob |

Hi Bob,
I guess the Design owners would not provide any, nor Jane,......I haven't been able to source either. Rather usual problem of sourcing again,..though being a "new 2016" problem in lieu of a 1942, I think Navy Ship site,.......um,.. Can't think of the ^%$@ Name,........ But Ross Gillett per "Australian Warship" at topmill@iinet.net.au may be the winner or lead. Crikey,..haven't ate enough red meat lately Here's the designer's web http://www.damen.com/en/markets/defence-and-security Specifically http://products.damen.com/en/ranges/crossover Best I could do Gordy |

LMGO,... Ahoy Luig
Yeah,..all things including M1A1s in C-17As!! (Mind you, shame the Navy can't carry these ashore by LCM, though that's peace time WHS I suspect, not overload Mil Spec) The Colour scheme reflects the owner DMS Maritime......It will be also crewed by civilians from DMS Maritime. Launched in Vietnam on 30th August 2016. SYCAMORE will undergo sea trials and then arrive in Sydney in early 2017. PS: Need a pic of the 35mm recce camera installation on a RANFAA A-4G (Engine bay?) Yes please - that would be nice. I have a photo of the RNZAF Perkin-Elmer Mini-Pan (same same RAN FAA singleton) in the wing situation. I believe the RAN FAA camera went there also - avoided all the runny crap in the FWD hell hole. A short video clip of an A4G approach to MELBOURNE can be seen with a camera in the wing position I'll guess. |

Just realised that an e-mail contact is likely to have a bunch of info about the PERKY ELMAfudd MiniBedPan Camera. I'll check up on it - meanwhile....

Gordy, earlier I had assumed that you had seen some 'minipan' photo examples in the 4.4Gb PDF with a few pages (including the NATOPS pages) on the subject - all KIWI photos. So anyway here is a 1970 Kiwi example (so I guess we copied the Kiwis) and perhaps they started out with the minipan in the aft hell hole. Photos are from a Kiwi RNZAF techie wot wrote a book 'bout 'em (Kiwi A-4Ks etc.).
"Practice Air strike on the Palmerston North square clocktower taken by Minipan camera from another RNZAF A-4K Skyhawk on 4 Sept 1970" N.B. the shadow of the A-4K on the far right with the shadowmaker near the tower. This post has been edited by Luig on Dec 29 2016, 03:20 PM Attached Image |

"Attack on the ‘burnt out’ trawler the ‘Dong Wong 513’ off Dunedin on 16 Dec 1994 by RNZAF 75 Squadron A-4K KAHU Skyhawks” photo by ‘minipan’. First photo shows a bomb explosion near miss that would have been effective due shrapnel/blast effect.

Wow,.....guess they're really a post strike camera (1-2 Sec Post)
So you, per email, were saying only one "unit" may have been purchased. Its a rare fit then. Anyway onto see if other types, like Sabre or Venom had a fit or two,.... Gordy |

In RAN FAA the minipan was for BDA Bomb Damage Assessment or general recon. Those Kiwi photos were taken by the wingman or special assistant A-4K for taking piccies for the occasion I would think. One has to be careful of shrapnel and I guess they were. IF the camera was in the position shown in the KIWI photo then perhaps the bombdropper was taking photos as the bomber was pulling upwards out of the dive. I dunno. Can only guess.
