Thanks Phil,

This got me thinking.

The first RAN Skyhawks were delivered to 805 SQN in 1968 and the last RAAF Sabres were retired from 5 OTU in 1971.

I just wondered whether the two types ever encountered each other during those three years?

If so, it would be great to see some photographic evidence.

I guess that I've always thought of them as aircraft from two different eras (in ADF terms anyway).

Does anyone have any info?

Cheers

From the Side Number 883 section of any A4G PDF online (page made from a digital hand held photo of VC-724 linebook page by Dave Masterson): Date was 1969-70?

I think the pilot of the Sabre was Dave Cassebohm. I think he had run out of fuel on a Navex. Aircraft stayed overnight and was gone next morning.

Note the wry remarks about the F-111, in those days it was an uncertain beastie:

Thanks Phil,

What a hoot!

So the Super Spewkbird Mk2 was an ADF "Black Project".

Nice one!

We'll have to raise a new ADF-Serials page on that one.

And as for the Phantom and F-111 comments, we ended up with both as it turned out!

Where is the line book comment on that? ;-)

BC, The linebook authors never go back to apologise. The author of that page was a friend of Dave Cassebohm (if Sabre pilot name correct) Ralph McMillan. I think Cassebohm is standing next to the no.9 on the Winjeel nose. The photo is of No.59 RAAF Pilot Course 1966.

Too true,

No apologies.

I also notice that the "9" on the Winjeel is actually propped behind the "5" to make up the course number!

The things that we had to do before photshop!

^_^

I was at Williamtown 1968/71 OCU and 5OTU, I seem to recall several exercises off the coast where Sabres encoutered Skyhawks, can't put a definite date on them though.

Rod, Those encounters for VF-805 were often on navigation/strike exercises for the squadron when I guess available aircraft from Williamtown were used for 'bounce' (enemy deterrents). Other than that can't say except by the time I was on VF-805 those sorties north of Sydney had ceased. Apparently later in the mid to late 1970s those exercises resumed. Apart from that stray Sabre I don't recall seeing other Sabres at Nowra.
