Operational performance of Naval radars is routinely checked by measurement of the vertical coverage diagram (VCD). Comparisons of returns from a calibrated target with the VCD facilitates the detection of any degradation. 38SQN was sometimes tasked with dropping test spheres in support of these activities, requiring a lengthy climb on oxygen to flight levels and a healthy workout for the heaters...
