Does nyone know of F/Sgt CR Green of 100 Squadron who won the CGM for throwing his Beaufort into a melee with about 10 japanese aircraft attacking a merchant ship, and driving them off? Date unknown. Does anyone know the Codes and "A" number of his Beaufort?

Hi Millsy2
You could have the labourious time and flick through 467 pages of the ORB at the NAA: http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx Title RAAF Unit History sheets (Form A50) [Operations Record Book - Forms A50 and A51] Number 100 Squadron Mar 42 - Aug 46 Series number A9186 Control symbol 123 Contents date range 1942 - 1946 Access status Open Location Canberra Barcode 13590 Once you located a date and serial, I might be able to improve on the Squadron code aspect. A9-181 incident took place near Buna on 8 Mar 1943. Ship involved was the SS Jacob, part of a convoy carrying supplies to the troops at Buna. Aircraft was some distance ahead of the Jacob when nine enemy bombers, escorted by 13 fighters attacked the convoy to score direct hits on the ship. Incident reported to base but while the escorting corvette began to pick up survivors from the sinking ship, 3 enemy fighters came down to strafe the merchant seamen survivors. Green banked steeply to attack them and the fighters broke off the strafing. He then patrolled between the fighters and the survivors until the enemy left the scene. Yeah, it's gets a bit messy as there are 2 Greens that were with 100 Sqn! This guy is referred to as Reg Green in the book, Knew the incident occurred before A9-225's demise but Song of the Beauforts does not have a good index so it was a matter of going through the book manually. Guess they could have done with a librarian's help on this ;)
Ah I remember the ORB when researching Geoff and the boys <_< Jan This post has been edited by jamboree on Feb 26 2008, 10:23 AM |
