It was on exactly this day (a Tuesday) 39 years ago that we lost Magpie 91 with F/O Michael Herbert and P/O Robert Carver. So after we had our little bets on the Melbourne Cup on this day in 1970 and the event was all over, Magpie 91 took off in the early evening for their night bombing mission. They finally returned home in September this year.
Gone, but not forgotten. Gordon |

Gordo for the sake of brevity I incorrectly implied that I knew Bob Carver - but I did not. Mike Herbert was in the same pilot course no.67 (learning to fly in year 1968) with the other RAAF Academy grads while I was one of the Navy ring ins. Mike was good at explaining difficult stuff and giving tips to newbies like myself - his help was always much appreciated. He had a good sense of humour also.

The earlier forum crash had wiped out some details posted about Mike Herbert and No.67 Pilot Course (Midn Thompson is moi). Here is the Graduation photo Dec 1968.

Hmmmm, Gordo youse not readin' da posts? I'm in white exackerly in middle of photo, exackerly under nose of de Wampire. :o
Dean, Adrian was a year or two older with a ready smile to help the youngsters also. As far as I recall Adrian Slootjes and 'Herbie' were the only two RAAFies to go to Canberra, the flying thingo. Met up with Adrian ('Dutchie' or similar) a few months later in early 1969, doing Canungra Survival Training out of RAAF Amberley, where he described the awesome nature of Canberra flying.
