Thanks Batman,..but you and Shep did the majority of the work,....
Just confirming the RAF Lincoln on Page 53 under caption: "Only bit of panache and colour in 1948 at Amberley, came from visiting RAF Lincolns, "Aries II" RE364 with RAF Wartime Roundels and another named "Crusader" (RF498?). The later name that would be politically incorrect on any Middle East deployment these days." The Lincoln is indeed RF498 , which originated from the Central Bomber Establishment (CBE) which was based from 1946 at RAF Marham. This Unit had one of the weirdest versions of a Lancaster,..a British version of a B-40,.....Lancaster LL780 fitted with a pair of remote controlled gun turrets,..not successful,.............I digress This base a few years later became a RAF B-29 Washington Bomber Base, with the OCU and some operational Sqns based there till 1953 when Operation Home Run was actioned to return to the USA some 37 Washington's. Readers will know that at least two didn't, rather, they stayed in Australia until they were scraped. Could have filled another page given my comment it seems? LOL Best Gordy :D |
