CHINOOK HEAVY LANDING IN TOWNSVILLE

On Wednesday 25 June 2008, an Army Chinook helicopter landed heavily whilst making an approach at the Military Operations in Urban Terrain facility at the High Range Training Area, Townsville.

No injuries were reported following the landing, and the Aircrew and 16 onboard personnel were immediately evacuated.

The aircraft sustained damage to its undercarriage and fuselage as a result of the heavy landing. A preliminary damage assessment is expected this week.

The Directorate of Defence Aviation and Air Force Safety have been notified and Army has commenced an investigation into the heavy landing.

Once the investigation is complete, Army will undertake action to recover the aircraft. Until the investigation is complete, Defence will not speculate on the cause of the heavy landing.
