A25-203 & A25-222, Are they with 5 or 6 Avn at the moment.

Hi Folks,

I was contacted in the very early hours on Sunday moning by Steve Vissher form the (Plane Crazy Downunder podcast) looking for confiramtion of whether Blackhawks A25-203 & A25-222 were currently part of B Sqn 6 Avn or 171 Sqn 5 Avn.

One of the team members there did a media ride in one of these two airframes and he would like to get the details of the participating unit correct for the show notes.

We have not updated our Blackhawk page for a little while:

Can anyone confirm the correct unit allocation?

A mix-up of units there?
171 Sqn is part of 6AVN Regt at Holdsworthy.
B Sqn 5AVN is based in Townsville.

Where was the trip - SYD or TVL? That might solve the query.
Then again, I was thinking that 171 might only had 100-series Blackhawks?

My fingers were type more slowly than the brain was processing facts!

I'm not sure where the flight was undertaken, Steve didn't tell me that, but I made the same observation to him - that the location might hold the clue.

Thanks for this information. I think it has cleared up my confusion perfectly. Unfortunately I had already recorded the intro to the show talking about 5Avn, but I (sort of ) corrected myself at the point where we throw into the actual interview (at the 1:03.23 mark in the show). As always, it serves to remind me that I should not rush my editing!

The flight took place in Sydney the week before last, so I guess it was 6Avn. Oh well. They landed in a park in Mosman and collected the assembled media crews.

One thing to remember, the remaining 12 S70-A9s that 171 Sqn will use before the arrival of the MRH-90 have been all updated with ECM and infrared jamming gear per revised contract issued a few years ago.

So those with ECM boxes on either side of the nose, should be the give away

Add A25-106, A25-208 , A25-225

A25-203 been a regular(or should that be a SF'er) since 2006. Seen with add on's to nose

Also big hint,..that don't carry the "V" winged Regiment motif on the tail of 5th AAR, but rather just the naked camo

A nice Redback would be nice, or am I mixing up 173Sqn?

saw a few of them recently, 171 sqn has a new emblem on the tail - not the V and horse of 5 Avn Reg but a black horse torsoe non the less with red eyes!

For the record "A25-204" has not had the IR/laser sensors on the nose fitted yet and 171 sqn has flown 5 Avn Reg birds with the 5 Avn Reg tail insigia still on them!

The aircraft all belong to a central pool which is drawn from to maintain capability at each unit. Often the aircraft swap units after contractor maintenance. Also, crews from each unit may swap jets eg. A crew from 171 Sqn operating in PNG may fly as pax to TVL then pick up helicopters there to air self deploy.
