I have just come across the serial numbers for the 3 Seaking helicopters recently sold to the RAN. They are XV-674,XV-710 and XZ-571 all are the HAS6 version. Also noted was that XV-710 has a ground instructional frame no of 9325M. I wonder if the other two will fly or will also be used for instructional ground training. They were sold in November 2005.

Also,
Are they (or will they) be shipped to Australia? BC |

It appears that these three will be shipped to Australia. The Navy it seems had purchased five ex Egyptian Sea Kings and these were stripped for spares and the airframes left in the UK. So maybe two of the HAS6 will fly and one will be an instructional airframe. These three aircraft are all Royal Navy machines put out of service due to the arrival of the Westland Merlin helicopter.

Thanks Dave,
So how many Sea King versions has the RAN acquired or operated now? Mk50, MK 50A, HAS.6 plus the Egyptian ones (which version there)? BC |

Essentially the Mk50, the MK 50A is an aircraft purchased from the UK to replace the earlier Seaking losses that we had. The MK50A in reality only has a bigger cabin area than the earlier MK50. The Egyptian machines were never in RAN service..only parts thereof..and the HAS6,if Australian decides to fly a couple of them will most likely be upgraded under the LOTE(life of type extension)programme to the MK50A standard. The HAS6 has a different electronic/ASW suite to the Australian version.
Are you confused yet. :) Dave |

Dave,
That was pretty much much what I was thinking. I guess I'm looking at it from the view of what has been acquired in total - whether or not they made it into line service. Thanks  BC |

Refer my post dated 16 March 2006 under the thread "Sea Kings" for a bit more information.
