...here is another photo from Kim Dunstan with another side code mystery
This Navy Vampire Trainer has the side code 869 but none of the information I have seen has codes in this series lower than 870
The serial number is not clear in the photo although it appears to be A79-4xx which again is not in the range of Vampire Trainers
Any ideas (Phil?)

Nice couple of 'side number' photos. Side numbers in that era before A4Gs (and S-2Es before the fire) were changeable - especially for embarked aircraft - which often changed from the shore/training squadron to embarked squadron side number allocation. As I recall vaguely being told this practiced ceased at some point before the nominated era, for a reason I have now forgotten. Sorry.

Probably it was easy to change side numbers but confusing of course. As I recall a series of side numbers belonged to a particular squadron. However none of that applied to A4Gs which had always the same side number.

Scene probably shows the tarmac on North side of ‘J’ Hangar between ‘J’ and ‘H’
