Re the DDT sprayer. My friend AVM James Flemming retd. flew some of these sorties in the Mustang although he told me today that it was only done at Iwakuni in Japan over the base...

To be somewhat pedantic, that is but a wing tip of a RAAF C-47 to the left. The aircraft in the background is a C-46 Commando. Nice colour shot though of the Meatbox. ;) I suspect the caption re the Dak and the Meteor was meant for image 2 ...

Jindivik33...Wow that is being picky!
The file names of the two photos are similar (ie Meteor A77-730 and RAAF Dakota) because the two photos were taken within a very short time of each other, check out the positions of the personnel. The actual photo captions in the gallery as distinct from the file names do not mention Dakota. I really can tell the difference between a RAAF Dakota and a USAF C-46! Invader26. I will chase up more info on the DDT spraying Mustang, I too suspect the photo may have be taken in Japan. In our data for A68-808: Struck a mast at Iwakuni (Japan) while DDT spraying 24/07/51. |

Martin
The DDT spraying was probably done over the base to keep the mosquito population down. We had this in Vietnam, a USAF C-123 would do a weekly spray fly-over the base. |

Just came across a couple of photos of RAAF Mustangs in Korea that appear to have a Gazelle or something similar in the centre of the roundel?

They are South African Air Force Mustangs, with a Springbok in the roundel

Apologies, Martin. I didn't intend to come across as picky. It's the way the links presented on my monitor.
On a different note, has the Meteor's port wooden intake been replaced and is unpainted? It looks quite strange ... |

No problem there Jindy!
That intake does look different, I will have a look at the hi-res scan when I get home and try and see if I can see what's happened with it. |
