Many of you will know that Do17 was located some years ago under fifty feet of water resting on it's back having been brought down by an RAF Defiant on 26 August 1940.
The RAF Museum Hendon are about to raise the aircraft over the next few days. http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/things...nservation.aspx http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22380915 This will be one to watch. Cheers BC Attached Image |

Strangely enough I was talking to a fella from the U.K on Sunday at the Wings over Illawarra airshow. We we talking about this Dornier and he was saying bits of it have already been recovered, the recovery team sprays the parts recovered with, of all things lemon juice. This apparently stops the corrosion in its tracks and is a new way of dealing with corrosion in wrecks once lifted out of the water. When the main hulk is recovered it will go to Hendon and be immersed in a bath for about eighteen months to stop any further corrosion. It is apparently in remarkable condition for having spent 70 odd years in salt water.

That's going to take a lot of lemons.

It takes a special kind of lemon!
But seriously, it's far more eco-friendly than other chemical alternatives and keeps the airfame smelling fresh for years...... :P Cheers BC Attached Image |

That is quit amazing. Its in pretty good condition despite having been in the English Channel for 73years! A real bit of history. The cockpit doesn't look to good though :(

Does its historic value derive from the fact that it's a rare Do17 or from the fact that it was shot down by a Defiant?

I agree,
Both reasons are of huge historical import. Also, it is because there are not any other known surving Luftwaffe bombers that took part in the Blitz on the UK.
