Yep, correct RAN FAA 1973 perspective. ;)

As I understand when A4Gs on CAP at least one was high on threat direction ready to be directed almost overhead the threat such that a pull through very steep dive to target would have them at edge of speed range (depending on whether any drop tanks carried) to arrive close to target six o'clock and gaining. These ship radar intercepts practiced a lot with a high degree of skill on part of the fighter director on the ship concerned.

One early story has the A4G (clean) coming up alongside the F-111 from below at low level - much to the surprise of the RAAFies. B)

"...No 6 Squadron carried out its first conversion course in Jan 1974, closely followed by No 2 Conversion Course in August 1974, on which the author completed his 2nd F-111 conversion. Both squadrons engaged in Kangaroo 1 Exercise in the latter part of 1973 and a number of smaller exercises. No 6 Squadron deployed to New Zealand in November 1975 for Exercise Tasmanex, a maritime exercise with the RAN and RNZN.

Squadrons trained in maritime strike exercises and their primary role, low level strike, largely ‘single ship’, but working up to three and four aircraft strikes on land (coordinated at 30 sec intervals) and maritime ‘targets’...."
