Nowra’s chopper to get a big makeover By ROBERT CRAWFORD June 28, 2013
QUOTE
"ONE of the Shoalhaven’s iconic  landmarks is about to disappear – but only for a short time.

The Iroquois helicopter on the post at the Shoalhaven Tourist Information Centre was due to be removed on Friday for refurbishment ahead of the international fleet review visiting Jervis Bay and the big celebrations in Sydney in October.

But the wet weather over the past few days has rendered the area around the base of the chopper too dangerous for equipment to be put in place to make the retrieval.

The refurbishment work has now been put off until early July when it is hoped the area has dried out sufficiently to allow equipment in to undertake the delicate removal.

The chopper will then be taken to HMAS Albatross for maintenance and refurbishment by the Fleet Air Arm Museum and Historic Flight volunteers, to have it looking shipshape and sparkling before more than 40 Royal Australian Navy and foreign warships enter Jervis Bay on October 2 ahead of the big celebrations in Sydney.

The navy is planning an international fleet review in Sydney to commemorate the centenary of the first entry of the fleet into Sydney in 1913.

The ships are expected to be in Jervis Bay for two days before departing for Sydney on Thursday, October 3 for a ceremonial entry into Sydney Harbour.

Jervis Bay has been home to the RAN since the establishment of the Royal Australian Naval College in 1915.

It is going to be a busy time for local navy personnel, who will also be celebrating the 65th anniversary of HMAS Albatross with a freedom of entry parade through Nowra on August 31.

It is planned to have the helicopter restored and back in place for those celebrations."
