Hi all,

Found this image amongst my late Grandfathers collection.

I can only assume it was taken somewhere in New Guinea during his time with 30 squadron c1943.

It appears to an American P38 Lightning, but why are the nose and tail numbers inverted?

Any ideas?

Bryan

No, not inverted, but reversed.

Nose number is 153, 53 on the fin.

Going by the nose number, its fair to middle that its either a 339th FS /475th Fighter Group or 433rd FS/475thFighter Group or outside,...80th FS/35thFighter Group P-38 depending on area location.

Looks like a model P-38F/G/H, .....being O/D.

Need a location, and I can "fly" to it Babe

Mystery solved.

Turned out to be Ligtning P38H 42-66841 which force landed at Faita Airfield Madang Province Papua New Guinea in September 1943.

Pacific Wrecks Ligtning P38H 42-66841

When i contacted Bob Jarrett of CLASSIC JETS FIGHTER MUSEUM in South Australia he was absolutely ecstatic that an image of the actual event had finally came to light. He thought he'd never see the day of an image at the time of the event.

CLASSIC JETS FIGHTER MUSEUM

Great story of recovery and restoration and a fantastic outcome.
