Black Hawk helicopter returns to air base

The Army Black Hawk helicopter that made an emergency landing in Townsville in north Queensland last night has been flown back to its air base.

The chopper was forced to land metres from the Bruce Highway on the city's southern outskirts after a fire warning light came on in the cockpit.

No one was hurt.

Defence spokesman Matt Grant says an initial inspection showed no signs of damage to the helicopter.

"After preliminary inspection of the aircraft it was decided that it was safe to fly back to RAAF Townsville where it will undergo further maintenance before being returned to the flight line," he said.

"There were no serious problems with the air frame but when that warning light illuminates the air crew have to put it down and make a precautionary landing."
